1. On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your sense of direction? 1=can’t find my way out of a paper bag and 10=if I’ve been somewhere once I can find it blindfolded ten years later.
I’d say a 9 because buildings get torn down and something else is built there. But you still have things you’ll recognize to let you know where you are.

When was the last time you looked at/used a map you could hold in your hand? (phones don’t count!)
In 1982

back east, down south, out west, up north
Choose one of these directional expressions and tell us why you chose it.
out west, because we were moving to California the last time I used a map

2. Did you do more talking or listening yesterday? Is that typical?
Doing more listening is typical for me.

Describe your yesterday in one word.

3. Time, money, water-power-resources, opportunity…which one on the list are you most guilty of wasting?
I think time would be most accurate

What might you do to change that?
Stop binge watching The Gilmore Girls ūüôā

4. Did your family take regular vacations when you were a kid?
Yes, we went camping at the lake and to Florida and a few other places

Tell us something you remember about a family roadtrip from your own childhood.
We always stopped at Stuckey’s on the way to and from wherever we were going. They have great food, and I love their Pecan Log Rolls. Plus my brother and I could get anything we wanted from the gift shops. Sadly, there aren’t as many of them as there used to be.

5. If you could grow anything you wanted, what would you grow?
Longer legs

Because being 5’0″ is a pain sometimes

6. Insert your own random thought here.
The other night I was driving home from work and it was dark. I came around a curve on the road I live on, and my lights shined on an owl. Sitting in the middle of the road. An owl! Just sitting there staring at me. I slowed down and it flew off. Weird!

1. Can you believe we’re rolling in to the Labor Day weekend? What’s a project you’ll labor over this fall?
Hopefully I’ll be planting a vegeatable garden

2. Tell us about the best perks you ever had in a job?
Medical & dental insurance that was really good, and weekends off

3. August 31st is National South Carolina Day. Have you ever been to SC? Any desire to go?
I’ve been through South Carolina many times, but didn’t spend that much time there sight seeing so I would like to go back and spend a few days.

According to Southern Living, these are the top ten things to do in South Carolina…

Explore Charleston, bike, golf or relax on Hilton Head Island, see the beach and the boardwalk at Myrtle Beach, visit the state museum in the capital city Columbia, observe the wildlife and natural beauty of the Ace Basin, take a walk or hop on a trolley and check out Greenville’s charming main street, visit Fort Sumter where the Civil War began, stroll through Pearl Fryar’s Topiary Garden in Bishopville leaving time to check out The Button Museum, also in Bishopville, see Morgan Island (also known as Monkey Island)-home to nearly 4000 Rhesus monkeys.

Of those listed, I’d like to:
Bike or relax on Hilton Head Island
See the beach and the boardwalk at Myrtle Beach
Observe the wildlife and natural beauty of the Ace Basin
Take a walk or hop on a trolley & check out Greenville’s charming main street
Stroll through Pearl Fryar’s Topiary Garden in Bishopville
See Morgan Island

Which is most appealing to you today?
All the above

4. Beef, pork, country-style, barbecued, baby back, spare or short…your favorite kind of rib?
I love ribs but my favorite is bbq

What’s a dish you enjoy that really ‘sticks to your ribs?
Chicken & Dumplings

5. What’s one important skill you think every person should have? Why?
Learning how to defend themselves, because this world is a rough place to live in

6. Insert your own random thought here.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the people by Hurricane Harvey in Texas.

1. Do you try to set rules for yourself about how you use your time? Explain.
No, I’m semi retired so I just go with the flow and do whatever I feel like doing. Unless of course I have an appointment or something at a specific day/time.

2. Monday was National Lighthouse Day. Have you ever visited a lighthouse? If not, do you have any desire to see one up close? Of the 10 Most Beautiful that made this list which would you most like to see in person?

Lindau Lighthouse (Germany), Fanad Lighthouse (Ireland), Portland Head Light (Maine), Yaquina Bay Light (Oregon) The St. Augustine Light (Florida), Peggys Point Lighthouse (Canada), Start Point Lighthouse (England), Tower of Hercules (Spain), Bass Harbor Head Station (Maine), and White Shoal Light (Michigan)

I love lighthouses and if you ever came to my house you’d know that right away. My walls all have lighthouse pictures on them, I have lighthouse figurines on most all tables etc., and I even have lighthouse light switch plates. Of the ten listed, I’d like to see the Fanad Lighthouse in Ireland the most because well, it’s in Ireland. I love the St. Augustine Lighthouse and have visited a few times. I’ve even climbed to the top and bought the t-shirt

When you’ve been away, what’s your ‘lighthouse’ telling you you’re on the right road home?
The 301 exit sign on Interstate 75

3. What have you unintentionally stopped doing? Is this something you need to pick back up and begin again, or is it something you need to let go of for now (or even permanently)?
I can’t think of anything I’ve unintentionally, or intentionally, stopped doing

4. We’ve had a full week of August. Share a GRAND moment from your month so far.
My GRAND moment was 2 weekends ago when my son Anthony and I went to the beach. I’d been trying to go for a while, but we’re in our rainy season, so it took a while before we had a decent day.

5. Tell us one song you love with the word ‘baby’ in the title.
Sunspot Baby by ‚ô• Bob Seger ‚ô•

6. Insert your own random thought here.
You never know what someone is going through, be kind!

We’ve reached edition number 315 here in the Wednesday Hodgepodge. So tell us, what were you doing at 3:15 yesterday? Is that typical? On a scale of 1-10 (with 1 being low and 10 being high) what’s your energy level usually like at 3:15 PM?
Yesterday at 3:15 I was getting ready to go to work, which isn’t typical. Usually I have to be at work at 7:15 am, but once in a while I have to be there at 5:00 pm. Energy level at 3:15 pm is usually between 4 and 6. I exert a lot of energy at work

2. A frisbee, a tantrum, a towel, a party, a punch, or a curveball…which have¬†you¬†most recently thrown or had thrown¬†at/for¬†you? Elaborate.
How about none of the above? Sorry, but none have recently been thrown or thrown at me

3. What are three things that would help you right now. Tell us how or why.
A vacation, new kitchen appliances, & a pile of money. Why? Because I need a vacation, I don’t want to take the appliances we have where we’re living now, and because remodeling is expensive.

4. Do you think you’re strong? Why or why not? What makes you strong?
Yes, I do think I’m strong. I’ve been through a lot in my life and I survived some things I didn’t think I would. After God, my kids and grandkids make me strong. Without their love and support, I would be lost.

5. Do you enjoy reading historical fiction? What’s your favorite book set sometime in the past?
I don’t like historical fiction much at all, so it’s funny that one of my favorite books is an historical fiction. When I was younger and hooked on Danielle Steele, she came out with an historical fiction, Zoya. I didn’t want to read it because it was an hf, but decided to because it was written by Steele. I LOVED IT! After all these years, it’s still one of my very favorite books ever.

6. Insert your own random thought here.
Not a thought, but a question. Would you rather go on vacation to Japan or Ireland?

1. The first day of summer rolls in later this week. What are ten things you’d put on your list of ¬†quintessential summer activities? Will you try to manage all ten this summer?
1. Go on a mini vacation
2. BBQ’s
3. Walks on the beach
4. Walking the trial alongside the Withlacoochee River
5. Going on a few day trips with my daughter or son
6. Eating lots of watermelon and fruit salads
7. 4th of July fireworks
8. Riding my bike
9. Going to flea markets/yard sales
10. Going to the drive in

Yes, I think I can do all 10.

2. Do you collect seashells when you’re at the beach?
Yes, have since I was a teenager

What do you do with them once you get them home?
I have some sitting next to my computer and some that go into display cases.

What’s your favorite place to comb for seashells?
I get shells from the beaches around where I live, don’t have a favorite

How many of these ‘best beaches for hunting seashells’ have you visited?
Couldn’t get the link to load correctly, but I’ve been to a lot of ¬†beaches in Florida, and a few in California & North Carolina.

Which one would you most like to visit?
Calvert Cliffs State Park (Maryland), Jeffrey’s Bay (South Africa), Sanibel Island (Florida), Shipwreck Beach (Lanai Hawaii), Ocracoke Island (North Carolina), Galveston Island (Texas) and The Bahamas
I’d like to visit Jeffrey’s Bay, Shipwreck Beach, and The Bahamas

3. At a snail’s pace, shell out money, come out of your shell, go back into your shell, drop a bombshell, happy as a clam, clam up…which ‘shell’ phrase could most recently be applied to some event or circumstance in your life? Explain.
Shell out money certainly applies to my life right now. We’re remodeling a house in a nearby town, and keep adding more and more to the list. I can’t wait until it’s done and we can finally move.

4. What summer activity do you dislike? Why?
Golf. I never understood why someone would spend so much time out in the heat and humidity, hitting a ball and then chasing it to hit it again, over and over. I’d rather be riding my bike, walking a trail. Even though I wouldn’t golf, I do enjoy a quick game or two of putt-putt with my kids and grandkids though

5. What’s something you see as quickly becoming obsolete? Does that bother you?
There are two drive-ins near me, one a 5 min. drive, the other about 30 min.¬†When I was a kid there were drive-ins in just about every city. Now there are just a few here and there. I’m hoping the ones that are still open stay open for many many years. It will definitely bother me if they aren’t.

6. Insert your own random thought here.
I don’t understand why people are in such a big hurry all the time. When I was growing up people were so much more laid back. We still did the same things…work, school, sports, girl/boy scouts etc. We did it all at a much slower pace, and I don’t understand why today it’s rush, rush, rush. If someone does know, please let me know.

1. The Hodgepodge lands on June 14th this week, Flag Day in the US of A. Do you fly your country’s flag at home? Sometimes, often, or every single day? Have you ever visited the city of Brotherly Love (Philadelphia)? Did you make a point of seeing The Betsy Ross House? Have you ever made a trip to Baltimore? If so, was Fort McHenry on your itinerary? (where Francis Scott Key was inspired to write The Star Spangled Banner)
We don’t fly a flag where we live now, but the house we’re moving to has a flag pole and we plan on flying one there. I’ve visited Philadelphia but didn’t see Betsy Ross House, haven’t been to Baltimore.

2. Red flag or white flag? Which have you encountered most recently? Explain.
A bit of both. Our house remodel is taking so much longer than expected, but I’m not giving up.

3. Are you a stay in the car listen to the end of a song kind of person? What kind of person is that?
I’m usually listening to an audiobook, not songs. I’ve been known to finish a paragraph or two before turning the car off. Not sure there is any one definition of what kind of person stays in the car to listen to the end of a song. People are too diverse and there are many reasons a person would do it.

4. What are some of the traits or qualities you think a good dad possesses? In other words, what makes a good dad? What’s an expression you associate with your father?
A good dad listens to his children and spends quality time with them and teaches them through his own actions, and always makes them feel loved. My dad was always singing “You’ll never know dear, how much I love you”.

5. What’s one rule you always disagreed with while growing up? Is that rule somehow still part of your adult life? Is that a good or bad thing?
I don’t remember a rule that I disagreed with. My childhood was pretty amazing. And I’m a “go with the flow” type of person.

6. Insert your own random thought here.
I’m a movie addict, so I find it strange that I’ve never seen so many of the greats, like The Godfather 1 or 2, Citizen Kane, Mary Poppins. I did dvr both Godfathers last week so I plan on watching them soon.

1. What color is prominent in your home? Are you glad about that or wishing you could cover it up or remove it?
I’d say a bit lighter than Cappuccino White, since all the walls are that color. And yes, I’m tired of it. When I move I’m going to go with something more colorful

2. What’s something you’ll NEVER do again?
Get married. At my age I just want to be able to go/do what I want when I want

3. Tell us a couple of ways you fit the stereotypes associated with your gender, and a couple of ways you don’t.
Women love chocolate: Yum, yes I do, I love love love chocolate
Women only want successful, rich men: Money can’t buy you happiness

Don’t fit:
Women aren’t handy with tools: I can fix a lot of stuff around the house and even cars
Women are bad drivers: I’m a very good driver

4. May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. Have you ever owned a motorcycle? Ever ridden a motorcycle? If the opportunity presented itself would you hop on a motorcycle and go for a ride?
I’ve never owned a motorcycle but have always wanted one. My love of motorcycles started when I was young. My brother had a minibike¬†(kids version of motorcycle) and I rode it all the time, and loved it. I told my kids a few times that I wanted a motorcycle and they all said “NO!” But I would hop on one if I had an¬†opportunity to

5. If someone wanted to understand you, what should they read, watch, and listen to?
Read my blog
Watch The Big Bang Theory,¬† NCIS’s, the¬†Chicago shows, and movies
Listen to Christian music and oldies

6. Insert your own random thought here.
I want to make a “Summer Reading List”, but I’m having a hard time coming up with books. I’d like books that are beachy/light, and bit shorter (250 -300 pages). All suggestions would be very much appreciated

1. Share a favorite memory of your mother or share a favorite something from your own life as a mother.
My mom was an awesome mom so I have many favorite memories of her. I can’t share just one. One of my favorite memories is that¬†she took¬†me and my brother to all kinds of concerts, musicals, and movies. She also took us to the pool most every day in the summer. She loved the rides at the theme parks as much as my brother and I did. She would give me money and let me go to the mall on Saturdays with my two bff’s. One of our parents would drop us off and then pick us up when the mall was closing. Back then we didn’t have to worry about getting kidnapped. We didn’t lock our doors or worry about being out after dark. I know that’s more than one memory, but it’s hard to pick just one.

2. In May we celebrate teachers (May 9) and nurses (May 6) both. Most every family has at least one in their midst, so tell us something (or a few things) you appreciate about the teacher or nurse on your family tree.
I can’t think of anyone who is a teacher or nurse. There probably is someone, but my mind is blank at the moment.

3. Chicken salad, egg salad, tuna salad…which would you go for if all three were on the menu? On bread or a bed of lettuce? If you answered bread, what kind of bread would make it the perfect sandwich?
I love all three, but I’d probably go for the chicken salad, on Ezekiel Sprouted Bread

4. Do you have a desk? Is it organized? If so, share your secret to keeping it that way. If you don’t have a desk, where in your home do you take care of family paperwork and business? Where do you normally sit to blog?
Until I got a laptop I had a computer desk and that was where I wrote bills etc. Now that I have a laptop, I work at the dining room table because we only eat there when we have company. That’s where I blog and take care of paperwork/bills. It’s pretty organized. I do keep my Bible on the table near me because I use my laptop to keep track of my daily Bible readings, a few books, a cd player to play audio cd’s, my iPhone, water and a table top fan because I can’t stand quiet. I turn it on when I’m not listening to an audiobook, tv, or music.

5. When I was nine years old….
I was a Girl Scout and loved every minute of it. We did so many activities and I loved earning badges. My favorite part was the camping. I loved going camping. I also loved that my mom was the Girl Scout Leader. She was the best mom, and I loved spending time with her.

6. Insert your own random thought here.
I don’t know what the heck is the matter with some teens. I just read about a 68 yr. old woman who went to the pool area of her neighborhood to ask some teens to turn down their music. They were having a pool party that hadn’t been approved by the association. A 16 yr. old boy picked her up and they fell on the concrete, hurting her leg and arm. Then he picked her up again and threw her into the pool. Why? For calmly asking them to turn the music down? She also had two small dogs on leashes but thankfully she let them go before he threw her into the pool. Someone had a video of the whole thing and when they posted it he figured he better turn himself in before the police came knocking, so he did.

1. Can you tell I’m embracing a Cinco de Mayo theme here this week? Do you like Mexican food? What’s your favorite dish? How about on the side-black beans, pinto beans, refried beans, rice? What about heat-mild, medium, hot? Will you celebrate with Mexican food and drink on May 5th aka Cinco de Mayo?
I love me some Mexican food and usually eat it at least twice a week. My favorite is stacked Enchiladas, but I also love tacos, burritos, chalupas, chorizo and avocados. I like my food a bit hot.

2. Ever been to Mexico? For work or holiday? Love it or no? If you haven’t been is this a place you’d like to visit? Can you speak Spanish?
I’ve always wanted to visit Mexico, but haven’t found anyone else who wants¬†to go. I can speak a limited amount of Spanish, but I have Rosetta Stone and want to keep learning.

3. What’s one thing you may accomplish this month?
I’m such a procrastinator that I have no idea.

4. If you were mayor of your village, city, or town, what’s one thing you’d like to see changed, done away with, revamped, or accomplished? Is serving in public office something you’ve ever seriously considered?
There’s not really much for teens to do in town, so I would love to see a “teen center” built to give kids another place to hang out. And no, I’ve never thought about serving in public office.

5. What’s something that may be popular, but that you just don’t get?
I don’t get why there are so many food bloggers out there that take multiple photos of the same food and post them all in the same blog post. I only need to see one photo, not a bunch. It’s the same thing. And it makes the page load sooooo slowwwww.

6. Can’t let this week slip by without mentioning Thursday May 4th is Star Wars Day. As in ‘May the 4th be with you’ ahem. Are you a fan of the Star Wars series? Exactly how much of a fan are you? On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being ‘I’ve seen every film, own the action figures, might have dressed as Darth Vader for Halloween one year’, and 1 being, ‘what’s a Vader?’ -where do you land?
I’m familiar with the Star Wars movies, but don’t think I’ve seen the first one all the way through, and haven’t seen the others at all. So, I guess I land on 1, although I do know what a Vader is.

7. Scroll back through your blog posts and in three sentences or less tell us the general theme of your fourth blog post. Does it still ring true today? Is it a topic you re-visit on your blog from time to time?
My fourth blog post is a review for June Bug by Chris Farley. It was SO good! Yes, I re-visit this topic often.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
The older I get the less I like humidity and cold weather.
