New To Me Stuff:
On our way to Georgia for our vacation my son saw a sign for Buc-ee’s and said he wanted to stop. I had never seen one before but he said they are HUGE, and it was! They had everything I could think of you needing on a road trip, and then some. I just found out yesterday that there is one in St. Augustine and Daytona Beach. I’ll be visiting those the next time I’m near them. It was way cool!

We went to Stone Mountain, Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, Chattahoochee River (Alabama side), Blue Spring State Park, and we also saw signs for some small towns on the way back home & went to a few to check them out. We did so much walking, and Stone Mountain was all up and down, barely any flat walking, and my legs were so sore beginning on the first day. I’m used to a lot of flat surface walking, but not walking up and down. We rode the Sky Ride up most of the mountain but had to walk the rest of the way and it was very uneven. But it was so worth it! Great views!

Looking forward to…
Going on another day trip with my daughter, plus my oldest granddaughter is in Puerto Rico with her boyfriend visiting his family, I can’t wait to see all the photos and hear about their trip

Question Of The Week…

  1. I’ve been to a Buc-ee’s they are fun.

    • I couldn’t believe how huge it was and how many different items they had. If I hadn’t been on vacation I would have bought one of the grills 🙂

  2. It sounds like you’re having some good summer activities. I really need to get something planned so that I feel like I’ve done something and not just hung out at home all summer.

  3. We are eagerly looking forward to taking a trip soon. I am always surprised when I don’t get much reading done on vacation. I always bring along a lot of books!

The person who started Buc-ee’s is a friend of my uncle’s here in Texas. I’m sure it doesn’t surprise you that it began in Texas.

I so enjoyed Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Mister Rogers is a favorite. And Tom Hanks.

My favorite vacation destination? #1 is Paris. #2 is anywhere out west in the US.

    Love your shot of Cairo!

    • LOL! No, that doesn’t surprise me about Buc-ee’s. How cool that started it is a friend of your uncle!

I saw Won’t You Be My Neighbor? already and am surprised that I never watched Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. I’m a huge Tom Hanks fan too!

I always wanted to go to Paris, but now my #1 is Ireland.

Cairo was a cute little town, I’m glad we decided to check it out.

  4. Lol. You caught me with Cairo.

  5. I’m so glad you had such a great vacation!

Our daughter lives in Portland and they are having record-breaking heat. Yesterday it was 108, today it’s supposed to be 112, and tomorrow, 114! She is sick of it already, she says. They’re not set up for that kind of heat there and many people, her included, do not have AC. I’ll be glad when they’re past it.

    • Thanks, we had an awesome time!

It’s our rainy season here. I can’t stand when the humidity is high. The humidity is so high here that it can make the “feel like” temp. close to 10° hotter.

My sister used to live close to Portland, she said it is beautiful in that area.

  6. I’m glad you got to do so much on vacation Vicki. I never heard of Buc-ees – perhaps a regional thing? I looked it up though – in New England the largest convenience store/gas station places we have are Cumberland Farms or Pride establishments.

We haven’t been on a plane in about 6 years or so but my favorite vacation place was always Aruba, gorgeous, safe and always perfect weather too. We went every year for at least 10-12 years in a row but, a 6 hour flights no longer interests us 🙂 We tend to do more overnight to drivable places no more than 3-4 hours away.

Hope you have a good week.

    • We have Cumberland Farms here, but they are TINY compared to Buc-ees! So far they are only in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Texas. It started in Texas and there are a lot of them there. Deb @ Readerbuzz said the man who started it is a friend of her uncle.

We drove, not ready for planes yet either. It was 6 hours (more with all the stopping) but I took 9 days off so it was ok. I have a friend who loves Aruba too.

  7. Glad you had a great vacation! Be cool and stay cool! 🙂

  8. Your vacation sounded great! Now I want to go to Buc-ee’s. I’ve never been to one. I hope your legs recover quickly and you have a great week!

    • It was fantastic Mary, thanks! Buc-ees is really something! My legs were better the morning after getting home. I guess all they needed was a rest.

  9. You made me curious so I checked — there are 19 places in the US named Cairo! I thought of Cairo, IL first, which is obviously not the one you found. Your vacation looks very eventful.

    best… mae at maefood.blogspot.com

    • Wow, I would have never guessed there were 19 cities in the U.S. named Cairo! Thanks for looking it up and letting me know! We had a great time and look forward to going somewhere else towards the end of the year.

  10. It’s hot and humid here too. Pure Joy and The Hope Chest look really good. I have to add both of them to my wishlist. Sounds like you had a great vacation.

Hope you have a great week!

  11. I am ready for cooler weather too! Hope you stay cool and have a good week!

  12. Glad you had a good vacation! When my grandfather was in pilot training during World War II he and some of his buddies got in trouble for flying under a bridge over the Chattahoochee so that’s what I think of anytime I see the river mentioned! I love the Coke museum but it’s been so long since I’ve been there! I’m a big Disney World fan and pre-pandemic/leukemia we went every year but I love visiting just about anywhere. Have a great week!

    • That’s a great story about your grandfather! The Coke museum was neat! We tried all the different flavors from different countries and my favorite was from Zimbabwe. I love Disney and all the theme parks in Florida. At one time we had tickets to them all for a few years, but my favorites are Busch Garden, Islands of Adventure, Hollywood Studios, Sea World, & especially Universal Studios because I love Mardi Gras & the concerts!

  13. It sounds like you had a great trip! It’s hot here now too. Argh we all need cooler temps. My #1 vacation destination …. hmm. I like to go to the beach in Calif. and the mountains in Colorado … ha!
    Have a great week.

    • Our trip was so fun, we went places I’ve been wanting to go for years!

I lived in California for a while and was just across PCH from the beach, I loved every minute of living there and have wanted to move back ever since I left. I like mountains but in the winter it’s scary what with the snowy roads etc. My aunt and uncle used to live on a mountain and every time we stayed there I was afraid a car was going to land on their house.

  14. I’ve heard of Buc-ee’s and seen some posts about it. It looks like a crazy place!

The weather. We don’t have the humidity here but 111 yesterday and 106 today. Ugh. I am ready for summer to end if it didn’t mean rushing the year.

    • Buc-ees is awesome! It’s a gas station on steroids and I ended up bringing so much stuff from there home!

I can somewhat take the high temps, but when you add in high humidity it’s awful! Feels like you’re in a sauna.

  15. I’m glad you had some field peas! They are deleicous and I could eat them with rice or on their own. Sounds like you had a wonderful vacation, I enjoyed reading about it. Cairo is a place we drive once in a while. It’s small.

The humidity here is crazy and of course we get the afternoon thunderstorms.
    Buc-ee’s sounds like fun.

    • I’ve loved field peas for as long as I can remember. My husband’s cousin has a huge farm and I used to go there and pick field peas and a lot of other things. Now I just buy them frozen at the store but they are still so good! Buc-ee’s was quite the experience and I can’t wait to go to another one. There’s one in St. Augustine and one in Daytona Beach. I don’t go to Daytona Beach often but I love St. Augustine.

I know we need rain here a lot, but I’m not a big fan of the rain everyday during our rainy season.

  16. 90F with 64% humidity with a 102F “real feel” here today so I do not understand why the cat does not want to be inside with the AC. I check on her every 10 minutes to see if she’s ready to come in.

All your recent adventures sound wonderful.

I will be over for dinner on pork chop night! Love to eat ’em. Can’t make a decent one.

    • I always check the “feels like” temp because that’s what it’s going to feel like, and when the humidity is high it can make a huge difference. My tiny dog gets so overheated very quickly outside. I have to keep a close eye on her. My cats won’t go outside. Well, a few times the older one has stepped one food outside the door, peeked around, and then came back in.

We had a such a good time!

I love pork chops too. I usually make them on my Foreman grill but I keep an eye on them so they don’t dry out.

  17. Sounds like a fun vacation! I’ve only seen a Buc-ee’s once when we were visiting friends in New Braunfels, TX. You’re right. It’s huge!

We’ve been on a 5-week long rv road trip and it’s been miserably hot and dry for the past week. We hit 107 the other day and the rv a/c cooled us down to about 88. 🙁 At least we weren’t camping near Portland or Seattle! As far as where we’d like to go, I’ll say Alaska since we’re in the process of planning that trip for next summer.

    • It was a fun vacation and I was already told to plan one for later this year to Key West, somewhere I’ve wanted to go for years.

My mom and dad had a camper when I was growing up and I loved going to all the different lakes near where we lived. I also went with the Girl Scouts. I miss going.

I hope it cools down for you and that you have a great time!.

  18. Hi Vicki! Aaah the doggy books look so sweet. I had a quick look. I have no idea what Buc-ee is, but gosh it sounds like I’ll get lost in it. And I mean it in a good way!

It’s terribly cold here with us, so enjoy the summer!

Hope you will have a good week and happy reading.

    Lots of Love,

    Elza Reads

    • Buc-ee’s is a HUGE gas station/store. It was amazing!

Hurricane Elsa is heading toward us, right now only getting a lot of rain and wind. Hopefully it will simmer down and head out to the ocean!

My reading is getting better, I’m clawing my way out of the slump.

      Have a great week!

  19. Aren’t Buc-ee’s wild? It’s almost a field trip in and of itself! So glad you had fun on your vacation and sounds like you were able to do a lot of fun stuff. Like you though I’m already over the heat. I love traveling but due to the pandemic we haven’t traveled since last year. Hopefully next year will be different. Hope you have a great week!

    • Buc-ee’s are amazing, I can’t wait to go to the two that are near me! It’s cooled of here because of Hurricane Elsa. Lots of wind and rain last night with tornado warnings, but no damage. I’m keeping an eye on the news to see what’s expected today.

Thanks, I hope you have a great week too!

  20. Sounds like a super fun road trip! I haven’t heard of Buc-ee either! Will need to check it out if I am near one. It sounds great.

I’d really love to visit Alaska one of these days…

    • Buc-ee’s is so neat. I could have spent a few hours looking around but we were on our way to Stone Mountain so we only stayed about 1/2 hr.

I’ve wanted to visit Alaska for so many years, maybe one day 🙂

  21. Whoa, time to turn the AC up and the ceiling fan on, close the shades and do some reading.

My favorite vacation destination is Orange Beach, Alabama. Looking forward to it after we take the kid back to college in September.

    • It’s been cooler while Hurricane Elsa was going through, but now it’s getting hot and humid again 🙁

I was just in Alabama (for a few hours) on my vacation a few weeks ago. We were mainly in Georgia.
