I recently saw Bryan post his favorite books from his last five decades and I enjoyed reading his favorites. Trying to think of my favorites from each year from that far back hurts my head so I thought I’d just share the 5 books that I always think of first when I think of my all time favorites.

Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman
Dollanganger series by V.C. Andrews
Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo
The Stand by Stephen King
Zoya by Danielle Steel

Have you read any of these? What are your 5 favorite books?

  1. I have too many fav books to list! Recent books include The Tenth Muse by Catherine Chung and the mysteries of Ellie Griffiths. Also, Ellie and the Harpmaker was a good romance.

  2. I’ve read Are You My Mother? lol I don’t know if I could narrow it down to 5 books but 2 that I’ve never forgotten are Little Women and The Diary of Anne Frank.

    • Are You My Mother? is the book that started my lifelong love of books, when I was just a few years old! I’ve never read either of those books but I have my mom’s very old copy of Little Women.

  3. Vicki, I’ve only read the first book on your list! I will keep your choices in mind. Like Kathy, Little Women and The Diary of Anne Frank are classic, memorable books for me.

  4. I loved, Are You My Mother? sweet

I like S. King but, never read The Stand – it’s size must be too intimidating LOL

    • It is a very long book and so is Zoya. I usually don’t read books that long, with SK being an exception, but both of them have been on my list of favorites since I read them.

  5. The Stand is on my list of all-time loves as well. Read it when it was first published and I was in college. Didn’t really have time for it, but read it anyway. I reread it now and then. Those V.C. Andrews books – wow – I remember thinking how crazy they were at the time.

  6. I’ve read all of these except the Johnny one. I don’t know if I could just come up with 5. I will try and try to include ones different from yours:

    IT
    Nancy Drew Series
    Left Behind Series
We Need to Talk About Kevin
    The Giving Tree

    • How could I forget about the Left Behind Series! I bought them all as soon as they were published and read through them like I had nothing else in the world to do. Thanks for reminding me!

  7. Wow, that’s a hard one. A Christmas Carol comes to mind, if that is considered a book and not ‘just’ a story. I’d have to think long and hard about what else would be on the short list 🙂

    • It was hard for me too, but I decided to go with the 5 books that I read a long time ago but have never forgotten. Ti also reminded me of the Left Behind Series. I plan on re-reading these sometime soon.

  8. What a great topic! The only one I’ve read is Are You My Mother? and that was always a favorite bedtime read.

    • My mom and older sisters read Are You My Mother? to me when I was just a few years old and it started my love of books. I now have the book and a stuffed dog from the cover that was bought for me for my birthday one year. I really need to reread it.

  9. I think I’ve only read Are You My Mother?

  10. Johnny Got His Gun! I remember that!!!! Great book.
