The Storyteller's Secret

The Storyteller’s Secret by Sejal Badani

I was five years old when I begged my mother for a dog. The breed or size didn’t matter. I just wanted something of my own to love and to hold tight. Mom surprised me with a puppy waiting on a leash three days after I asked. It was perfect. I took the dog everywhere and slept with it every night. A few months later, the dog got out of the backyard and was lost. I sat on my bed and cried for hours while my mother watched me silently from the doorway of my room. I finally fell asleep, exhausted from my grief. Only the next morning did I discover she had come in during the night to pull the blanket over me and turn off the light. She never said a word to me about my loss.

  1. Oh, I love the excerpt. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Excellent! I’m a sucker for stories with kids in them, but now you’ve added a puppy – Wow! I hope it’s as good as it sounds.

  3. I found that opening really quite upsetting – it’s the brutality of the lack of action I think – I do hope you enjoy your read.

  4. I love the writing and feel like this might be a wonderful, maybe emotional, read. Hope it’s a good one.

  5. oh how sad! To lose a dog that way! Sounds like a fascinating read.

  6. The writer has put together a good enough hook that I’d probably keep reading. Either that or tear up the book and find something else to read. Heh, heh! Seriously, those first few words draw one in quite effectively.

  7. Well, that’s certainly a sad beginning. Hope it improves regarding the sadness factor. Maybe she’ll find the dog again…?

  8. This is a sad opening paragraph! I might be tempted to continue though.

  9. The opening caught my interest.

  10. The excerpt really draws you right in. I want to know what happens now. I would read it just to find out if the dog is found. I hope so but…

  11. Great excerpt, but I don’t know if I could read it. I shy away from books involving animals, because I usually cry.

  12. Great opening.

  13. That beginning just breaks my heart! I’ll need to see your thoughts on this one before I add it to my TBR!

  14. That was upsetting!

I hope you will enjoy this book, Vicki!
