For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.

Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

Thoughts
I LOVED this audiobook!!! Kya was an amazing person as a child and I was so impressed with her survival skills. I don’t know if I could have managed as well as she did. I loved following her through her childhood into her teens and then into adulthood. The way the town felt about her had me shaking my head. Thankfully she had Jumpin’ and his wife to look after her.

Kia loved her marsh and learned as much about it as she could, which was pretty much everything.  I enjoyed learning about it too. I was surprised at how smart she was even though she had never gone to school. She just loved learning and became quite knowledgeable about her part of the world.

So many things happened in this book and I was glued to the story. The book was sometimes very sad, sometimes happy, shocked me a few times, and during part of the book I was trying to figure a few things out. Some I did, some I didn’t.

Loved the story
Loved the characters
Loved the dialect
Loved the narration

If you haven’t read/listened to this, why not? Another book that’s going on my “Best Of 2018” list!
