College Grad Seeks Meaningful, Gainful Employment. Fails

I needed a job because I needed money to pay rent, a position most people find themselves in at some point in time. More than that, I wanted to climb onto what I saw as the first rung of adulthood: a career-track job that you got business cards for and had to wear a suit to. I wanted to be taken seriously. I was obsessed with doing what I thought I should do because, up to this point, It’s worked out pretty well for me.

Based on this intro, would you read more or pass on this book?

  1. Now I am definitely curious. I am always interested in stories about people and their lifestyles. Thanks for sharing.

  2. I like how this story begins. I think we can all identify with this young person’s position. I’d like to read more.

  3. This sounds as though we will take a look at someone on the brink of adulthood, always an appealing subject.

  4. The thrill of getting business cards with your name on it is something I can relate to. I’m curious to find out how this one turned out.

  5. Interesting opening. It sound as though this is a serious person with ambition. The cover and the title suggest it turns into an alternative lifestyle.

  6. I like the style of writing here. It made me smile so I’d keep going.

  7. Interesting intro. I’d want to know more.

  8. Yes, I like that beginning. So many of the young people in our family and ones we know seem kind of lost, even with degrees and plans. Life somehow doesn’t work out for them in the area of employment. LOL

  9. I’m intrigued enough to keep reading. Enjoy!

  10. Sounds like a good plan to have. I would keep reading.

  11. That’s funny, mine has to do with paying rent too.

  12. Sounds like a good read!

  13. I like the beginning and the cover of this one! I wouldn’t think a financial book would be entertaining but this seems like it might be!

  14. I don’t read much nonfiction and finance isn’t an area of interest for me but this one sounds like it’s got a very personal touch. I’m sensing that it’s not going to be the usual “do this, don’t do that” sort of thing which is appealing.

  15. I like the beginning, and I felt like that when I was leaving college. Heck, I still kind of feel this way five years into teaching. (We don’t get business cards, though.)

  16. Simple living? Very hard in the 21st century.

    • I don’t think it would be that hard. I’m moving from a 2300 sq. ft house to a 900 sq. ft. house and getting rid of almost everything I own. I’m definitely going to simplify my life. I’ll also have a 5 min. drive to work instead of a 30 min. drive.
