William Sydney Porter was accused of embezzling money from an Austin bank where he worked as a teller, went on the lam to Honduras, and returned to face charges after receiving the news that his young wife was dying. Convicted of the crime, Porter spent three years in an Ohio prison, where he occupied his time writing and adopted the pseudonym O. Henry.
