This is not the sandwich I had planned to make and share today, but someone left the Chipotle mayo at work (shhh, it was Anthony). I’ve been seeing a commercial for some brand of mayo, can’t remember which one, that says a grilled cheese with mayo instead of butter is so much better. Since my son Anthony and I both love grilled cheese sandwiches every once in a while, I wanted to test that out for myself. Luckily I had all the ingredients.

Not the best photos, but I was in a hurry.

Thoughts
Anthony and I both thought these tasted almost the same as when made with butter except that there was a slight sweet taste to it. We both said we’d rather stick with butter, but mayo would be good for anyone who wouldn’t mind a slightly sweet grilled cheese sandwich.

  1. I love a good grilled cheese! I’ll have to try the mayo version but I suspect I’ll prefer butter as well.

  2. Oh I’m so glad you checked this out. I think I’ll stick with butter — especially because I don’t love mayo or the idea of that hint of sweetness.

  3. There’s is nothing more satisfying than a good grilled cheese! I tried a recipe a while back that recommended mayo for the ‘spreadability’ and I used a garlic mayo I had on hand and I really liked it in terms of ease of spreading and I liked the added garlic flavor. I think I liked it because the garlic mayo was not sweet though–not sure I would like a regular mayo or one that leaned to the sweet side.

Thanks for sharing your sandwich with Souper Sundays this week too! 😉

  4. Thanks for testing the sandwich for us. I was curious, but not willing to test it myself. I love a good grilled cheese too, especially with soup.

  5. My husband puts mayo and butter on his grilled cheese!

  6. I good grilled cheese sandwich is a thing of beauty. I would never have thought of putting mayonnaise on it though. Maybe I’ll give it a go one day, I always have mayo in the fridge anyway.

  7. I would have never thought of mayo but I see it works. I used to have one of those little grill machines for sandwiches and I don’t know what happened to it, they are so handy. Love a good cheesy sandwich.

  8. never would have thought this. I’ve used mayo instead of egg for coating chicken, (it is really better).

  9. I am going to try this out for lunch today! Thanks! Have a great week. Cheers from Carole’s Chatter

  10. Thanks for being the guinea pigs 🙂 for me. Now I can just stick with butter.

  11. My son was just talking about using mayo instead of butter for grilled cheese. Not sure if he made it that way or not.
