Friday 56
Hosted by Freda @ Freda’s Voice

The other day I was looking through my books and this grabbed my attention. I’ve had it forever and though it was about time I read it. I don’t know why I waited so long…I’m loving it!!

Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall, Denver Moore

Until Miss Debbie, I’d never spoke to no white woman before. Just answered a few questions, maybe–it wasn’t really speakin. And to me, even that was mighty risky since the last time I was fool enough to open my mouth to a white woman, I wound up half-dead and nearly blind.

“No sir,” I sad, shaking my head, “I’m not Poopsie. I’m Ron Hall.”
“no, you are not!” he scolded like a doting aunt insisting that a full child take a second helping of pie. “Your Poopsie! And you can call me Snookems!”

While he was saying this, I took in his glittering ensemble. Strapped around his head behind gold aviator sunglasses, Mr. Goldgerg wore a black patch over his left eye, and below that, a pearl-snap cowboy shirt and jeans, white-python- skin cockroach-killer boots with gold tips and heel ornaments, and a solid gold, buffalo-shaped belt buckle with rubies for the eyes and diamonds everywhere else.

  1. That’s a very odd excerpt. I’m not sure what to make of it.

    • The 56 wouldn’t have been my pick, but I was limited to what to choose from on that page. It was very strange to me too, but something that happened between Ron and a man he was put in touch with about a painting he was selling.
The beginning is more like the rest of the book, and it’s very good so far!

  2. Now I am definitely intrigued. Thanks for sharing! And thanks for visiting my blog.

  3. Love the cover and the title.

    ENJOY!! Thanks for sharing.

  4. It’s amazing how the 56 was so different from the beginning. With the beginning I thought the book was set it a whole different time. Well done!

  5. This looks like a book I would pick up myself. Nice pick. Have a wonderful weekend.

  6. Hi Vicki,

What a strong and emotional opening paragraph and the lines from page 56 are mind boggling in their descriptiveness. I keep tryng to put this ensemble together and picture the character … but just can’t without cracking up.

This probably isn’t one I would have chosen purely by the look of the cover, but I am fascinated by the synopsis and have to add it to my list!

    Thanks for sharing,

  7. Carol said just what I was thinking. Very odd. I think Snookems might be a bit touched. Could be very interesting reading. I wouldn’t want to miss something unique.

  9. This sounds interesting.

  10. I love your blog title. I would rather be at the beach. I can read anywhere but I do love the beach.

  11. I love the cover and the beginning. The 56 is a little odd but that’s sometimes just what happens! Glad you are enjoying this one!

  12. What a beautiful book. It sounds like some good historical fiction, snookems? 😉
