Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”

Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly!

In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

I didn’t really know who Mindy was but loved the title of the book and the cover, so decided to read it. Once I read her bio I thought it would be a lot funnier than it was. Don’t get me wrong, it is funny, I was just expecting it to be funnier.

The book has stories from her life…her childhood, friends, dating, Hollywood and some stuff in the vein of “stuff happens” & “life’s not fair”.

I think you’d enjoy this book whether you’re a fan of the author of not. It’s a pretty short read and even though I didn’t love it as much as I thought I would, I’m still glad I read it. Mindy’s sense of humor isn’t the everyday run of the mill type, and I liked that.

  1. I don’t know who Mindy is, but her points of view on Hollywood, etc. sound different enough to be interesting.

  2. I loved Mindy Kaling on The Office. This sounds like a good read.

  3. Hi Vicki,

I was never a huge fan of the original English version of ‘The Office’, and have never really bothered about comparing it to the US version, so I don’t really know who Mindy Kaling is, I’m afraid.

This is a good example of why I don’t really read memoirs or biographies, although if there should ever come a time when I couldn’t find anything else in the house to read, then one of hubbie’s political memoirs whould have to come down off the shelf!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this book and have a good week,

    Yvonne

  4. I’ve heard of her but don’t really know who she is. I’ll probably skip this one.

  5. I have had this book on my TBR list since the day it came out. One day!
