Mailbox & Musing

Apr 302012

MAILBOX MONDAY… is a gathering place for readers to share the books that came into their house last week and explore great book blogs. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.

April Host: Cindy’s Love Of Books

I only received 3 books this week:

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern was a win from Brooke @  The Blog of Litwits

The Man Who Changed The Way We Eat by Thomas McNamee ~ May 8th tour for Free Press Blog Tours

A Story of the West by Susan Spence ~ May 14th tour for PUYBP

MUSING MONDAYS… is a weekly event where MizB will ask a book/reading-related question, and you answer with your own thoughts on the topic.

Do you listen to audio books? If not, why not? And, if so, what has been one of your favorites, so far?

I rarely listen to audio books, but plan to start listening to them more. I have a cd player on my treadmill, but usually watch tv instead of listening to an audio book. I recently bought a portable cd player so that I could listen to them no matter what room I’m in. Of the ones that I have listened to, my favorites have been by David Sedaris.

I think the main reason I don’t listen to them very much is that it bugs me when  it’s a woman reading it and she deepens her voice when it’s a man talking. The same for a male reader who tries to sound like a woman. Plus, it takes less concentration for me to read a book, since I usually listen to audio books when I’m doing something else, and when I read I book, that’s all I’m doing.

  1. I sometimes listen to audio, this month I listened to three. But, it isn’t something I do every month.

  2. I haven’t listened to audiobooks but its because I think I would get distracted/bothered by the changing character voices, as you mentioned. 🙂 hop on over if you have the time! have a wonderful monday

  3. Hi Vicki — hope you like The Night Circus — I didn’t expect to love it but I did. enjoy

  4. I don’t mind the format…but my mind just drifts and I realize I have missed a big chunk or I
    fall asleep…

  5. Great answer! I can’t really listen to audio books, they always mess me up. There are definitely some good ones out there though! 🙂

    Here’s mine:

  6. Three books is a good book week! I’ll be curious to see what you think of The Night Circus. Enjoy your new books.

  7. I have only heard one audiobook recently. I don’t have much opportunity for it, and with the four zillion physical books I have, I don’t see much point in it personally. But good luck with your listening! Maybe you’ll get some more read! My mailbox this week can be found here.

  8. I haven’t read The Night Circus yet, but I really would like to read it soon. Happy reading!

  9. Yes I totally hate when they change their voices to do a different character. I just can’t do audio books. Here’s my Musing

  11. I’m with you on the audio books–I’m usually trying to do something else and zone out.
