At age 55, Maggie is losing the battle with her fear of failure and small designer dogs, but her friend, Cher, is determined to rescue her from a future of scrapbooking and lace doilies. Bear has a secret worth killing for, so when an archaeology student stumbles too close to his hidden goldmine, the results range from comical to deadly. In a small South Carolina town, a secret from Cher’s past entangles the girls in a murder investigation, in which they learn that the first step to surviving a mid-life crisis is: don’t die.
It’s rare to find a book that has all the things you love most when it comes to reading. This book had all three of mine. Mystery/suspense, humor, and friendship. It’s hard to imagine that this is the authors debut, it is very well written.
Two middle age women, Maggie and Cher, love life and are always getting into one mess or another. They make a list of all the hobbies they’d like to do and end up going panning for gold. But instead find a dead man (killed on the murderers third try). There are lots of twists, and things and people aren’t always what they seem, which makes this a guessing game from the beginning. Once they find the body, things really get interesting.
I loved the way Maggie and Cher interacted with one another. They were supportive, loving and a 2 woman comedy act. I also loved that they took the dogs, Buddy and Fluffy with them on their adventures.
The book is full of interesting characters. They have big personalities that jump off the pages and make you take notice. Even the people barely mentioned made an impression on me.
If you’re looking for a humorous, light and quick read, then this book fits that bill. I really enjoyed it and will more likely than not read it again. I know I’ll definitely be looking for the authors next book.

  1. Hi Vicki,

Thanks for highlighting this book in 'Cover Art Weekend Blog Hop', or I might never have found it.

The review is great and after checking out the author website, I have decided that it sounds like a great fun must-read.

Karla certainly has a way with words and I should imagine that there is never a dull moment, either when she is around, or when reading her book!!!

  2. Great review! I loved this book. I made the mistake of reading it at the gym while I was on the elliptical and almost fell off from laughing.
