Rachel, Kate, Jo, and Sarah have been close friends since college despite their differences. Rachel is an energetic, adventurous daredevil; Kate is the perfect housewife; Jo is a tough-as-nails career woman; and Sarah is a dedicated humanitarian, who spends her time in the jungles of Africa. Rachel’s life is tragically cut short by cancer, but she leaves letters behind for all her friends and family, urging them to challenge themselves and step outside the boundaries of their comfortable lives. Kate must go skydiving, Sarah has to look up and reconnect with the one that got away, and Jo is entrusted with the care of Rachel’s young daughter. Although Kate, Jo, and Sarah are surprised by Rachel’s requests, they can’t refuse her last wishes, and in executing them, they find out what’s really important in life. Higgins’ novel will appeal to fans of feel-good stories whose life lessons lead to happy endings.
This is a great feel good book. Even though Rachel, one of the four friends, died before the story begins, we get to know her because of the memories of Sarah, Jo and Kate. Rachel has given the other 3 their own challenge to complete, sort of a last request, via a letter she wrote before her death. Rachel is a woman I would love to have as a friend. She’s outgoing, adventurous and carefree. Without giving too much away, the women each embark on a journey that is nothing they would have ever done if not for wanting to fulfill the request because of the love they felt for Rachel. Each of them is thrown WAY out of their comfort zone, but in the end, each find their life unbelievable enriched by Rachel’s challenge.
I love books about friendships between women, and this book, although it had an underlying sadness because of the loss of one of them, was a wonderful story. It was a very smooth read with very descriptive scenes so it was easy to feel as if you were part of the story.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves a good story about friends.
